The proposed 275-unit development at High Mountain Golf Course in Franklin Lakes.Borough of Franklin Lakes

FRANKLIN LAKES – Borough officials on Tuesday took the first step to rezone High Mountain Golf Course to accommodate 275 residential units.

According to a statement released by the borough council, members on Tuesday passed a first reading of an ordinance that would see the development of 60 single family homes, 160 carriage homes, and 55 affordable housing units at the site of 131-acre property on the Wyckoff border.

The deal is contingent on the borough approving the project, which would see the private golf course closed by the end of 2014. Luxury home builder Toll Bros. reached an agreement with the owners of the golf course to purchase the property.

Franklin Lakes officials had been negotiating with Toll Bros. for more than a year, agreeing in October to reduce the density to 275 acres.

The proposal will now go to the planning board for review on Nov. 25, and an eventual vote. The public hearing before the mayor and council is scheduled for Dec. 17.
